So how can a sprinter get the most powerful start out of the
blocks from a crouch start? As we have learnt, the block start
is a technical skill with linking phases to achieve a complete skill. It is an
accumulation of all the aspects of the skill that assist an athlete to gain the
most powerful start.
Within the
‘On you marks’ and ‘Set’ phases, an athlete must hold the correct posture with
their centre of gravity over their hands to create the greatest amount of
potential kinetic energy. In the ‘Gun’ phase an athlete must begin to make use
of their levers; their arms must swing and legs cycle to create a great amount
of kinetic energy. This is assisted by the falling motion created a from the Set
position as the centre of gravity is over the hands. Within the acceleration
phase an athlete must have a strong drive and a high recovery phase to propel
their body forward. Furthermore, arms must swing and legs must cycle within unison
to create forward acceleration and torque. Finally thinking about the
physiology of an athlete it is also important in a powerful start. Athletes
with longer lever and muscular hips can create greater torque for a faster
start.
